Feedback solicited

just me - ginger
Yesterday, on the lawn below my office window, the older Kaleidoscope campers played a very fun version of Quidditch.

I took out my camera and spent half an hour photographing them, especially the kids wearing golden streamers to their backs (they were, of course, taking turns being the Golden Snitch, in relay race fashion).

I dropped a CD of the best pictures off at the camp office, but it was late in the day and I haven't gotten feedback, nor have they been posted in the camp DropShots album. Would anyone be interested in taking a look and making detailed comments? I can put them on Flickr or Picasaweb.

Many thanks!

I may solicit input into creating an anonymous scientific poll over the next six months to analyze why conflicting panics create such mess in fannish communities, though.

I have added a couple of people based on interest in what I have to say and kindness in responding to it.

Comments screened. Acknowledgement that you've read this would be nice. (Not pebbles. In Judaism pebbles are left on graves.)

I am sad

just me - ohi picture
As at least half of you reading this are aware, there was a kerfuffle recently at a local annual party held by friends-of-friends of mine and it has caused a rift in the community.

This post is only tangentially about that.

This is about dear friends who are shocked that the rift happened, and dear friends of theirs who are feeling angered that people could do something so terrible, and so forth.

I gotta say -- welcome to my world.

I have felt uncomfortable at large open-invite parties for ten years or so. It just started being hard to walk around and find my friends, and went on to "no-one really cares if I'm here." And then I developed issues with finding the crowds downright claustrophobic.

I can't go with my kids because I can't be with the grownups. I've tried. Eventually in one of the five minutes that I've allowed myself to be out of direct-line-of-sight, something happens. (The last two times, my daughter wet herself rather than brave the dense crowd to get to me and ask for help getting to the bathroom.) And even if there's another adult who I trust to keep an eye out, eventually they get distracted too. And I don't get sympathy for having high-need kids (one autistic son and one easily overwhelmed-while-simultaneously-overwhelming daughter), and it feels as though I'm the only person with high-need kids for whom that's true... or at least the only person who has high-need kids who isn't already a close friend of the hosts.

And there are my medical issues -- I can't go without the kids because I have to have a ride if I want to stay after 8pm when I take my "no driving we mean it" meds and actually see the fire spinning. And there are too many other people dependent on rides who are more emotionally invested in being there.

And, too, my husband is looked at with suspicion and my housemate keeps running into people who have Opinions about brown-skinned people ("but we didn't mean YOU").

And it's not just this party. It's reading people's journals and Facebook posts of various kinds and saying to myself "do I really want to spend an afternoon with people who don't have compassion for kids with disabilities? who post nasty unkind memes about Christians that ignore people like kayre and Amaebi? who judge people they don't know because they are poor?"

"Do I want to get up in their face and challenge their assumptions and make the hosts unhappy with me because I dared to get angry at another guest?"

Yeah, I've been feeling that last thing for a really long time.

I did not initially think that the party rule about the police was a problem because I felt that the hosts would always, always call the police if a party attendee told them it was necessary.

But then I found out that telling them that the police needed to be called caused them to exclude the person who needed the police, someone I trust for her unflinching and consistent honesty though I know her hardly at all. It doesn't matter that she wasn't already at the party.

So that's where I am. I hope my dear ones who hold the party hosts dear to them will get it.

I am going to screen comments here. I don't want people to hurt each other in my living room. Also leaving this public, so you can hurt ME all you want.

Memorial Day Sonnet

just me - ginger
Memorial Day Sonnet

We're here to honor those who went to war
Who did not wish to die, but did die, grievously,
In eighteen sixty-one and in two-thousand four
Though they were peaceable as you or me.
Young and innocent, they knew nothing of horror ---
Singers and athletes, and all in all well-bred.
Their sergeants, mercifully, made them into warriors,
And at the end, they were moving straight ahead.
As we look at these headstones, row on row on row,
Let us see them as they were, laughing and joking,
On that bright irreverent morning long ago.
And once more, let our hearts be broken.
God have mercy on them for their heroic gift.
May we live the good lives they would have lived.

~ Garrison Keillor ~

(A Prairie Home Companion, May 29, 2004)

Also, my all time favorite "wouldn't it be cool if this were true" Memorial
Day story:
Claim:
Former slaves reburied dead Union prisoners of war in May 1865, thus
creating the modern observance of Memorial Day.

MIXTURE:
TRUE: In May 1865, free blacks in Charleston reburied dead Union prisoners
of war and held a cemetery dedication ceremony.

UNDETERMINED: The event referenced above is the origin of the modern
Memorial Day observance.

Browngirl took me along on a fangirl outing to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Favorite Board Member took me to see Not By Bread Alone, a semi-autobiographical piece performed by the deaf-blind troupe that founded the Nalaga'at Center in the Jaffa Port.

I have to write about both of these when I have time! The first was glorious in that action-movie-with-good-character-development way. The second was glorious in that this-is-beautiful-and-thank-heaven-not-ableist-nor-sideshowish way.

Also, Marvel Universe fans need to read an Agents of SHIELD synopsis. I have slogged it out through the show with all its Encounter-at-Farpoint-level of bad writing, but it does explain a lot, and it's nearly up to a whole episode of decent writing.

(I was going to title this "stubborn people I love" but I can't write about my daughter right now.)

Otherdeb is having serious heart issues. She herself deprecates the seriousness and makes light of it, but I think everyone who knows her is completely aware of how serious it is. She talks about getting patted on the head and told "you'll be okay" by her friends in NYC fandom. I pointed out that this is far more a mantra and a hope and a prayer than it is in any way disregarding how serious it is.

I have never, ever, EVER had to pull up the car to her driveway before. She can hardly take enough breath to be able to walk half a block.

I am so angry that she didn't get recommended for surgery immediately, before her general fitness deteriorated to the point of her being at extremely high risk for it.

I want to keep her, dammit.

I'm very glad I allowed myself the impulse of driving to Brooklyn by myself this weekend.

She's holding a housefilk February 2. If you're her friend, or even a friendly acquaintance, you should go.

Summary:

"I deflected a spear," David would say, laughing as my eyes widened in fear despite having him safe in bed with me.

I splayed my fingers over his chest, the ridged scar tissue smooth beneath my hand. "You have seen so much," I said in wonder. "I only wish I needn't fear for your safety when you leave at last."

David bent and kissed me between my brows. "You needn't fear," he said. "I fight for your father, and the LORD is with him. As long as we walk with the LORD, He will protect us."

In the Scriptures, the story of Michal begins with love and ends with barrenness and death:

And Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 1 Samuel 18:20

And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child until the day of her death. 2 Samuel 6:23

Much might happen in between such short, bookend verses. This is the story of two young people who fell in love, who drifted out of it, and why.

A bit of humor and cuteness in the mail

just me - ginger
We've had the kids subscribed to PJ Library (free kids' books with Jewish content, scaled to age & parental preferences as established at sign-up) for a very long time - birth, in girlochka's case. Boychik aged out on his 7th birthday; girlochka is still subscribed.

Today we received a book titled Hanukkah in Alaska. Girlochka has heard a few stories about Alaska from theloriest, so she was excited.

Dear readers, it was a story of a moose, the sort of moose story that only Alaskans tell. In fact, I think I have heard three such stories from [personal profile] killing_rose alone. It is adorable and witty and full of those very true details, in both the text and pictures, that make you realize that even if this *exact* resolution had only happened in fiction, this author had in fact experienced the joys of having a wild, giant, stupid, and dangerous herbivore trying to winter in the back yard.

I recommend it, in case that wasn't clear. :)

So other TV-watching

just me - ginger
I have a good feeling about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which I really hope is borne out. It's troperiffic, but so is Castle, and I love Castle. And Clark Gregg, well. Hopefully Cobie Smulders will be able to do lots of cameos as Agent Maria Hill despite her other commitments. And the other characters could grow on me. It's got a Scooby Gang team vibe to it in the same way that Bones does.

Sleepy Hollow is OMG So 80s. This may be due to my first impression of Lieutenant Abbie Mills' hair - straightened, long, and very plainly dressed. Or it may be due to the attempt to mix modern day with Revolutionary War period. It rings true to me as being in a Westchester County town that isn't one of the ritzier suburbs. I like that the racial mix of the town rings true (well, the front of the house, anyway - they need to work on background faces). And also amused that I recognized John Cho upside down. But yeah, it's so cartoony (and weirdly anachronistic in spots) that I had to remind myself to chase the kindergartener away.

Speaking of cartoons, I'm very much enjoying the AU that is Beware the Batman. The art, voices, animation, and character development show a lot of thought and care.

Hopefully the actors and writers will continue to transcend their formulas in all of these.
